Biopsy

February 9th, 2009 · 10 Comments · All Gone Wrong

The words are delivered by our very nice paediatric consultant as lightly as she can muster: ‘William needs a kidney biopsy’ and I know that at this point, statistically, the prognosis for William looks suddenly a great deal worse.

William has made very little progress. In fact the only difference between now and when he was admitted to hospital five weeks ago is that his oedema has gone down a little. But he is still very poorly and still has large amounts of protein and blood in his urine. So we have now been transferred to the care of the Renal Unit at our regional hospital where William faces a renal biopsy.

I am trying to remain positive but I have this knot in my stomach so hard that I feel physically sick.

Oh Ella. I can’t even imagine how horrible this all is for you. I’ll be thinking of you. Please know you have friends all over the Internet who are hoping William gets better soon.

Ella, I’m so sorry to read this. Wishing you and William all the best and hoping for a good prognosis.

I just wanted to share something that (hopefully) will make you feel a little better. My niece (who is 5) had a liver biopsy a few months ago. They did it under general anesthesia because she was having some dental work done as well and when she woke up, she had NO IDEA. She looked at the little, tiny mark on her side and asked her mom if she had gotten a bug bite. It did not hurt one bit either.

I know your situation is a little different, but kids are so amazing when it comes to these things. When my son was 4 he had surgery and he needed nothing stronger than Tylenol following. I was amazed.

I’m wishing the best for you guys.

    Drat, drat, drat.

But remember, it’s a biopsy. Not a diagnosis. Hang in there, Ella….
