I definitely need this book--and am hoping it's not too late. Waiting 12 years into our marriage to have a child and then having #2 less than 3yr after #1 is taking a MAJOR toll on our relationship. Not to mention my staying home and starting my own business, moving 500 miles, and assorted family issues. Thanks for the great review, I'm off to Amazon...

Great review!

Becoming a mother shook me to the core, and becoming parents shook my relationship with my partner, nearly off its foundations. We are the typical 30-something couple who felt the pressure to have our second baby very close to our first. As a result, we've got a 3 year old and a 16 month old, and all is chaos. These have been the hardest 4 years of our lives, and at times I really didn't think our relationship would survive. The sleep deprivation, the ugliness over the inequality in childcare and domestic duties, the stress, the post-partum depression -- it's really a minefield. It's true that generations of women have survived without books and support groups, but I think it's so much better that we can break through our isolation, support one another, and work to change what isn't working for us.

I'm back! I read the book today and it is FANTASTIC. I'm not apprehensive about what is to come, just feeling prepared (ha!! you can laugh at me when I've had the baby!). Thanks for the review, I'd never have thought to read this without it!

I like your review but you have to wonder how generations of people have ever survived becoming parents and staying married without all the help of these kinds of books!

Sounds like a book I ought to read, though I would probably skip the blowjob bit (I just don't). I can't say for sure that it was a surprise, but I reckon that for the two of us post-baby, the boy really misses having sex and I really miss having time for myself.

And I've pretty much convinced myself that there will be no number two.

Great review! I've seen a number of these go round the blogging circuit now, but nothing hit me like the part above about the baby and the toddler. We've got one of each, and boy, it is an adventure!

Thanks for putting this out there!

Great review, Ella.

Eleven years later, our marriage is still suffering from the changes wrought when our daughter was born. I guess even though we no longer have a baby, there's stuff in there I could use, too,

Great review. It sounds like a great book. And yes the idea that my husband and I might be reduced to resenting each other scares the hell out of me!! So I will definitely be buying this book.

I don't really like parenting books but this one sounds interesting because I think most people approaching parenthood would be interested in knowing how to preserve their relationship after the baby comes. Having said that, most parents I know blindly believed that their relationship wouldn't change or wouldn't change much after the baby arrived! Perhaps it is up to parents to gently suggest they read a book like this.

I became unbelievably controlling after I had my baby. Nothing my husband did was right and I ended up feeling I had to do everything myself. I can see how ridiculous I must have been now but he was very understanding at the time.

I like the sound of this book. I'm a bit past all that early baby stuff now but I will certainly read it when we have another.
