Not so worried about relieving the congestion at the top end
By ella | September 14, 2006
The baby is desperately constipated. Watching him in such pain has been awful and we have tried everything medical and otherwise in the book to sort out his intestines without much joy. But I think I’ve found the solution: with cold season upon us again Ben has suffered with a series of nasty colds and because he has had difficulty breathing I have been searching for a nasal aspirator. For some reason nasal aspirators are frowned upon in the UK and therefore difficult to find. So I turned to the net and I found just the thing. But when I looked at the picture all I thought was: THIS NASAL ASPIRATOR FRIGHTENS ME BUT YOU CAN BET IT WOULD SORT OUT HIS CONSTIPATION.
(I’m sure I hardly need to point this out, but if you need to see my policy on Transparent Blogging click here.)

Poor soul, that’s an awful thing for babies to endure. Did the “otherwise” include homeopathy? I know several Mums who’ve found it usual for childhood constipation - probably better to see a practitioner for a full consultation, rather than self-prescribe from the health food shop.
Yes, I’ve tried homeopathy without success so far, so if anyone wants to email me some more off-the-wall suggestions, feel free.
so how’s the cold a solution to constipation? Are you going to use a nasal aspirator to suck out poo?
Yes. Although not really!
Have ;you tried prune juice?!
Yes I have Sara, by the bucketload. He loves it, which helps (there’s nothing like trying to force things down a baby that they hate) but it doesn’t seem to make any difference to the problem.
Hahahaha! (laughing at the snot vacuum, not at your child’s discomfort.)
Kiwifruit always works for my son, but the aftermath is quite messy.
Hadn’t thought of kiwi so I’ll give that a try. Thanks Karrie.
Friends recently had good luck with a glycerine suppository in a two year old. No idea if they are recommended for babies, though. I got to watch the success . . . Poor dear was on her knees rocking, but she did it!
Their doctor had also suggested “tropical juices” like mango.
How wimpy am I that I can’t bring myself to click the link?
Not wimpy at all Madeleine, although it’s not disgusting or anything, it was just the first thing that sprang to mind when I saw it! Ben has been on suppositories for three months now and has had tropical juices, prune juice, apple juice, lactulose (a softener). It’s no wonder he has no appetite left for food.
