Forty one weeks pregnant
By ella | January 2, 2006
I know. I haven’t posted in a week. Even I thought I’d had the baby.
But no, I am still sitting here with this baby piling on weight by the hour, especially after all the Christmas and New Year festivities, and if a girl can’t drink she is sure gonna make up for it by eating everything on offer.
Although I am now DESPERATE to have this baby I am more than a little relieved that it wasn’t born over the holidays, although we now risk it being born on the same day as my eldest who is just about to turn four but there could be worse things than sharing a birthday with your big brother. But I really am desperate now to have this baby out, not least because I know that for every day that passes now I am looking at another couple of ounces over ten pounds and the thought of that hurts, not as much as the practicality of pushing a ten pound plus baby out, but it hurts all the same. I’m so desperate that the husband will probably get to have his wicked way with me and - really - I am so looking forward to the thought of that, with all the discomfort I am in and given the size of me. Raspberry leaf tea, long walks, pineapple, homeopathic remedies - none of these have helped, so hanky panky it will have to be.
New Year’s Eve was a blast. I spent the whole night having contractions! But I went to bed late and woke up on Sunday morning, checked the bed and no, no baby had appeared overnight as I was expecting. I felt cheated. Going overdue is one thing but false labour when you are overdue just gets you all excited and scared unnecessarily.
Foolproof remedies for bringing on labour needed NOW, so please do the honours in the comments section. Words of encouragement about how pushing out a very large baby won’t hurt AT ALL in the comments please. Horror stories: well please wait until after the baby is born, in the meantime lie about how easy you had it, tell me the truth later.
Oh, and of course a very Happy New Year to you all.

Happy New Year to you too! Good luck with the baby, I’m sure it will all be worth it.
Happy New Year and Good Luck
Ok, this worked for me as I sat unhappily 42 weeks pregnant with my second bub - A spoon of castor oil in a glass of orange juice, followed by a chaser spoon of peanut butter to get rid of the oily taste that lingers in your mouth. Disgusting, I know, but other than the fabulous poo-age that ensued, I also begat a baby that night.
Oh, and happy new year!
I was 17 days over with my first and used the castor oil trick. That, plus a stretch and sweep from the midwife. One of them worked as labour began a few hours later!
If you want some reassurance about how giving birth to BIG babies can be easy and relatively painless, check out my birth story (on the sidebar of my blog) - “Short and Sweet”. I gave birth to my 10lb 10oz daughter in 90 minutes with no drugs, no pushes and almost no pain. Too easy!
Good luck for it all, and I hope you go into labour soon!
I’m so glad you were able to go to your party. Sounds like a fun time.
My water broke after I scrubbed the kitchen floor on my hands and knees. Not fun…just an idea!
My birth was really easy - no pain whatsoever and I didn’t even know she was out until she was brought over to me with a huge grin on her cute little face.
Well, you did say you wanted some lies…
Since my trio came at 30 weeks with a c-section I can offer no helpful hints. I just hope that baby comes out soon and is not painful at all and leaves you with a smile on your face! Would love to hear more about that fun, swanky new year’s party. Who did you see and talk to? Just trying to take your mind off of the contractions!
Maybe you’ve had him/her by now - hope so! Otherwise all the very very best. (I did have a totally painfree birth experience with both of mine but they were both c sections!)
Happy New Year
I see no one’s suggested hot spicy food yet. I’ve heard that a good hot curry can do the trick.
If not you can always try the castor oil option, because of course you know that’s going to grease your passages so much that the baby will just slip out without any pain or effort at all.
Happy New Year, Ella. There are worse ways to spend your time at a posh NY Eve party.
I’m going with Kitty. Chinese food did it for me!
I ran up and down the stairs for 2 hours while tweaking my nipples. Maggie arrived about 10 hours later.
I’m so excited for you. Anxiously awaiting the news…
It’s been FOREVER since I’ve checked in here… I’m so sorry!!!
However, maybe it was serendipity that I did, at this point, because I’m a former labor assistant and can give you a few pointers if you want to get this party started.
1. Don’t do the castor oil thing. While it does work for some people, if your cervix is not totally ripe it will just give you miserable cramps and diarrhea.
2. Instead, put an Evening Primrose Oil capsule in your vagina twice a day.
3. Best one of all: HAVE A LOT OF SEX. A lot. Semen is the best thing for ripening a cervix (even swallowed!) and orgasms are the best things to get your contractions moving…
Good luck and I’ll be back!!
I was only 6 days late with my oldest…the other 3 were induced a week early…I’m sorry you have to wait so long for this little bundle!
I hope that you are birthin’ that baby right now!
Sex. That’s what I think did it for me. Well…that’s how I GOT pregnant. That I’m sure of!
The only thing that worked for me was having the Doctor break my water. Both times. Everything else just made me uncomfortable (or miserable).

Oh, you’re so close!
Sending you labor vibes, and hoping you’re already holding that baby.
Ooh… I’m sending you good vibes and I’m hoping they feel like a massage (which I’d give you if you were next door).
No lies, both mine were easy. I wish your delivery run smooth and painless, Ella. Much love to you and your family.
Sending you best wishes and hoping you have already had that baby!
I bet the contractions started the moment you hit “post” … !
I’m sure you’ve had the baby by now, but I was a week overdue with my first. She was 10 lbs 3. It was a cinch.
I’m hoping you had the baby. I have no wise ideas because I had to be induced. But it wasn’t too bad!
