Bedtime battles
By ella | July 29, 2005
William has been in a big bed for nearly two weeks now and we haven’t had an unbroken night during that time. Either it’s wandering out of bed during the night or waking up early to play with his toys. And when I say early I really mean the middle of the night because although it might be 4 or 5 am and getting light that DOES NOT QUALIFY AS MORNING DO YOU HEAR WILLIAM? Given that it’s taking them both about two hours to finish playing and get into bed in the evenings, I have two tired and difficult children each day to deal with. They’re such a joy! Yesterday William had a fever and it was such a blessing because he went straight to bed and slept all night because he felt so poorly. Today we went to toddler playgroup and I was eyeing up the holiday club that they run at the centre because I am so sick of my children and I just want to inflict them on someone else everyday.Wow, I really am such a great mother.
But I am more clever that they are. I have started putting them to bed at 6pm, which means they are asleep by 8pm. However it also means supper at 4pm and lunch at 11am. Friends look at me like I am barmy when we are at a playdate and I start saying about 10.45 that it’s time to go home. Perhaps they just think I don’t like them much. But this is why I love having this blog. I don’t have to explain anything to friends anymore because they can just read it here. So now I have stopped throwing up we are back on the social circuit but no-one wants us because a) my children are revolting guests due to tiredness or b) we are leaving almost as we have arrived to keep with the new schedule that I have devised in the game of one-upmanship that is the relationship between me and my youngest.
He is two. I am a grown-up. I WILL win this.
