    Bump Talk: twelve weeks pregnant

    By ella | June 15, 2005

I’m coming to the end of my first trimester. Unfortunately the sickness is as bad as ever and Matthew has had to take some time off work to look after the children to give me a break and allow me to throw up without having a toddler hanging off my leg, or worse, peering into the bowl to see what Mummy is doing. My eldest, Harry, a loving and thoughtful 3, has taken to stroking my hair when he thinks I need it and my youngest, William, now a glorious 2, loves to take the opportunity to kiss me with big wet dribbly teething kisses whenever I am lying down (which is much of the time, but it never seems like enough of the time).

Tomorrow I have my first ultrasound, a nuchal translucency scan, to assess the risk of the baby having Down’s syndrome. I am nervous and excited about it, partly because the risk of the baby having Down’s syndrome has increased somewhat since my first two pregnancies, but mostly excited to see that there is actually a baby growing in there and not a puppy.

And of course we should find out tomorrow if we are having twins. I know in my heart of hearts that we are not, but all the signs point to twins so we shall see. If it’s twins, at least one of them HAS to be a girl. As it’s more likely to be fraternal than identical twins (see what an expert I am already?) we have two chances at one of them being a girl. So you know I’ll be having two boys then.

Despite the sickness I have managed to eat some chicken, some potato salad and some avocado over the last few days as well as the endless cake and dry biscuits which I snack on every five to ten minutes in order to keep the sickness from leaping up my throat and out of my mouth without warning. The poor baby must wonder what the hell it is supposed to live on when the majority of the food I am eating has the nutritional value of a shoe.

The only thing that makes me think I might be having twins is that my stomach is huge. I have been in maternity pants (trousers) for the last six weeks and I really look about four or five months pregnant. If there is only one baby in there I’m going to be kind of disappointed because it will just mean I am incredibly fat. Let’s pray for twins then. Than again, maybe not.
