Ten weeks pregnant: how to put your husband off his work for the rest of the day by telling him you’re having twins

    By ella | June 3, 2005

I pick up the telephone and dial my husband’s mobile.

    Me: Hi.

    Him: Hi, is everything alright?

Me: Yes, the midwife just left.

    Him: Is everything OK?

    Me: Yes. No. Um….

Him: What, is the baby OK?

Me: Yes. She couldn’t hear a heartbeat so I am probably about ten weeks pregnant like we thought.

Him: Great, you shouldn’t be sick for much longer then.

Me: Hopefully. It’s weird isn’t it, we stay in London to get away from the kids and end up with another.

    Pause.

Him: I should get back to work.

Me: The midwife examined me and said she thought I was unusually large if I was ten weeks pregnant. She checked again for a heartbeat but definitely couldn’t hear one so she thought the dates must be right. But I am definitely bigger than I should be. She showed me where my uterus should be at ten weeks, which is right down in the pelvis, and then pointed to where my uterus actually is which is nearer my navel.

    Him: Okay…

Me: Ummmm, she said for me to be prepared that I might be carrying twins.

    Him: (stunned silence)

Me: “I’m right in 95% of cases” the midwife said.

    Him:

    Me:

Me: I checked on the internet, which is never wrong, and it said that 1 in 27 naturally occuring pregnancies in women around my age are twin pregnancies.

Him: 1 in 27? Are you kidding?

    Me: No.

    Him:

    Me:

    Him:

Me: Well, I’d better go before the boys kill each other in the playroom. I thought I’d better ring and tell you. It’s two weeks before my first scan when we will know for sure.

    Him:

Me: I hope it doesn’t affect the rest of your afternoon too much.

    Him:

    Me: Bye.

    Him: Bye.
