A slightly senior moment
By ella | May 17, 2005
My father came to visit us today. My mother was already here looking after the children in order to give me a break from having to look after toddlers while vomiting (thank you so much, Mum) and Dad decided he would come and join us for afternoon tea (he knows that the way to his daughter’s heart is chocolate cake, not that you ever need an excuse to come over Dad, but when you bring chocolate cake we’re especially pleased).
The boys of course were over the moon firstly that grandma was here, and secondly that grandpa decided to come over as well. If you’re three or one the combination of grandpa and grandma is irresistible.
Anyway, as grandpa drove up he tells me, and these are his own words, that he had a “senior moment”. This essentially means that he had a momentary lapse of coherent thinking due to his age and that is the least offensive way I can put it. As he came up the drive he looked at the cars in the driveway and said to himself, Good God (because he’s British and that’s what British gentlemen say), Matthew has bought a new car. He only bought a new car a couple of months ago. He’s bought a new car (getting a bit flustered now at the thought of his son-in-law having bought another new car). That boy has more money than sense. What is he thinking, buying another new car? And he’s bought a Jaguar, JUST LIKE MINE. What is he thinking, buying a car just like mine? (very flustered, but perhaps just a little bit pleased) .
A few minutes later, when he parks his Morgan he realises - the car in the driveway was in fact not his son-in-law’s but his own which his wife had driven over here this morning.
And Dad, you know, don’t you, that you should never tell me your embarrassing stories, because I have no problem in telling the whole world about them. . .
