And the Oscar goes to….
By ella | February 28, 2005
Oscar night has been and gone again (where does the time go?). I was really pleased to see that Jan A.P. Kaczmarek won the Music Score Oscar for Finding Neverland. He was the rightful winner this year but I was still disappointed (as I always am when he doesn’t win) that John Williams didn’t win the Oscar for his score for Harry Potter. John Williams is without question the most wonderful composer. Even if you don’t care about films, music or film music you will surely be able to hum some of his scores: E.T., Star Wars, Superman and Jaws among scores of others. I think my first memory of wanting to marry someone was when I first saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind when I was about six or seven. It wasn’t Richard Dreyfuss or even Francois Truffaut, whose films I adore, that I wanted to marry, but John Williams who wrote the score. See - you knew I was weird, but you’re only just realising how weird….
For those in composing circles that argue that he is too populist (you know who you are) I maintain my stance that it is perfectly possible to be popular and still produce outstanding work.
And so now, while I am feeling musically inclined, I am off to listen to my Keane CD, loudly. At least it might drown out the din my noisy toddlers are making.
